A fleet of 200 electric bicycles has been stationed across Bradford as part of a local authority initiative to improve urban air quality.

The project, a collaboration between Bradford Council, operator Beryl, and rail firm LNER, launched today at Centenary Square. Fifty docking stations have been positioned at transport hubs, workplaces, and education centres to encourage commuters to move away from private car use.

The scheme is supported by revenue from the Bradford Clean Air Zone, which was established three years ago. Use of the fleet is intended to align with the district’s Climate Action Plan and long-term regeneration goals.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “I’m delighted to officially launch the LNER Bradford Beryl E-Bikes.”

“These public e‑bikes are something new for our city and will encourage residents, visitors, students, and workers to choose a clean, healthy, and accessible way to travel. The scheme draws on Beryl’s extensive experience in delivering successful bike hire projects across the UK.”

Beryl CEO, Phil Ellis, commented: “We are excited to launch LNER Bradford Beryl Bikes! Sustainable micromobility is a transformative technology, and public schemes like this make it more accessible and affordable. All-electric journeys using smaller, lighter forms of transport can significantly cut emissions and increase air quality in cities, an area of increased focus. We are proud to work alongside Bradford Council and LNER on this new e-bike scheme and look forward to seeing the Beryl BBE2 powering sustainable journeys throughout Bradford.”

David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, added: “Expanding our e-bike partnership with Beryl into Bradford represents an important milestone for LNER. The introduction of the LNER Bradford Beryl Bikes further strengthens our commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2045, while providing a greener, more convenient way for people to travel across this vibrant and growing city. Following Bradford’s fantastic Year of Culture, we remain committed to supporting the city’s continued growth and helping more people experience all it has to offer.

The bicycles are accessed via the Beryl mobile application, which is available to download on the Apple App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android devices. Once the app is installed, users can locate the nearest available e-bike via an interactive map.

To begin a journey, riders use the app to scan a code on the vehicle to unlock it. The fleet operates on a tiered pricing model, starting with a £1 unlock fee and a charge of £0.16 per minute. For regular users, “Minutes Bundles” and “Passes” are available, while students receive a 25 per cent discount. A promotional code, LNER20, currently offers 20 minutes of free travel for new users.

The 50 docking station hubs are strategically positioned across the district to link with major infrastructure. Key locations include:

Transport Hubs: Bradford Interchange and Forster Square Station.

Civic & Retail: Centenary Square, Norfolk Gardens, and Broadway.

Education & Health: The University of Bradford, local colleges, and district hospitals.

Commuter Routes: Cycle superhighways leading to Leeds, Shipley, Saltaire, and West Bradford.

The fleet is operational as of today, 10 March 2026.
