Leeds City Council has published new images showing how the busy Dawsons Corner junction will look once a major upgrade scheme is completed — a project officials say will ease congestion, improve safety and create more reliable routes for people travelling by foot, bike, bus and car.

Construction began in May 2025 on the overhaul of the A647/A6120 junction, one of the most heavily used gateways on the western side of the city. The scheme is a key part of the Connecting Leeds transport strategy, which aims to strengthen the city’s Inner and Outer Ring Roads and support future growth with smoother, more dependable journeys.

Dawsons Corner links the A647 Stanningley Road with the A6120 Ring Road, carrying around 57,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists every day. Council leaders say the scale of daily use underlines the need for long‑term improvements — particularly measures that make active travel safer and more attractive.

Road users are being urged to plan ahead for a significant phase of works taking place from Friday 24 April to Monday 27 April, which will involve major traffic management changes and full road closures.

To enable this phase to be set up, the following measures will be in place:

  • Bradford Road (B6157) eastbound lane closure from 20–24 April
  • Full weekend closure of the A6120 Ring Road (Farsley) and Bradford Road (B6157)
  • Two‑way traffic maintained on Bradford Road (A647) and Stanningley Bypass
  • Access preserved for New Pudsey station and Owlcotes Shopping Centre
  • Signed diversions for vehicles and pedestrians throughout the weekend

Residents, businesses and commuters are encouraged to check the project website and sign up for updates: https://dawsonscorner.commonplace.is/

Leeds City Council’s deputy leader and executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, Councillor Jonathan Pryor, said: “I am delighted to share the new visualisation of Dawsons Corner, which reveals a transformed, enlarged junction layout, making it better and safer for all road users.

“The need to improve the junction is a major priority. It’s important not only to improve traffic flow and air quality, but also to support essential links to future housing growth and developments, and for people to be able to access jobs more easily with consistent travel times.

“It is pleasing to see that the works are progressing to the planned schedule, with the next major phase earmarked to take place over 24–27 April. We are keeping residents and businesses regularly updated on progress and have set up a website with information about the project, along with plans and timescales. Local residents and businesses are engaged about the works, so they understand how the construction works may affect them.

“We appreciate that the works will lead to some disruption and recognise that it takes time to adjust to such a major change. We thank businesses, residents and bus operators for their patience, and we look forward to the long-term benefits once the scheme is completed.”

The council says the redesign will create safer, more direct routes for people walking and cycling — a key priority for the Connecting Leeds programme, which aims to make active travel a realistic choice for more journeys across the city.

The Dawsons Corner upgrade is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
